Author Topic: A lesson on rating gallery builds.  (Read 1768 times)

Ok so in the gallery you have just seen a house made out of 1x1 bricks, all of it is gray. What do you do? First off you don't rate it --/-- unless they say its ok, it should normally be --/10. You don't make this post, "THIS ROCKS  :cookieMonster: :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: :cookie: :cookie:!!!!!!!!!!" because 1. It is annoying. 2. It doesn't use any rating systems.

Second of all you do not over rate anything, take a look around the gallery to get it in your head what is good and what isn't, not every single blockland build whether or not it is made out of 90,000 bricks or 20 deserves a nobel prize EVEN, EVEN if it has lights and "pwerty particle emitters".
It has to have detail.

It needs to look like what it's supposed to be.

And if nothing else, especially deathmatches or minigames, it needs to be fun.

Here is what you SHOULDlong with a reply to a gallery build where the builder has said, "Please rate."

1/10
2/10
3/10
4/10
5/10
6/10
7/10
8/10
9/10
10/10

Gah mistakes, I will edit when I'm able to :(

Flaming is also unacceptable, if you don't like the person, take it in drama.

eh.. i jsut use my rating scale
4 max- effort
2 max- detail
1 - size
1 - color
2 max- efficiency of brick usage

and then basically i judge it as if it were a school assignment
5.75 or below - bad
6-6.75 - not bad, but in no way good
7-7.75 - its ok
8-8.25 - pretty good
8.5-8.75 - snazzy
9 - sweet
9.25 - super sweet
9.5 awesome
9.75 - almost perfect
10/10 is the best in that i have only rated 5 builds sucha thing that i can recall in Retail

I rate MAINLY from detail. I don't care if it's only as big as 100 bricks. If it's detailed and was made out of maximum effort, I consider it good.

i havnt seen anything in retail yet i would ever rate higher then 7.
to compare the "best of the best" so far i am still far from overly impressed.

Maybe im some jerk that thinks everyone sucks, but the community needs more skill. and it kills me to see a 10 on ANYTHING from people.

I actually wish badspot would rate, kind of set the curve of rating for the rest of us. Of course it wouldnt be fair, but the community dont know what good is right now.

I'd give your post 7/10. Could use more colors, and use the EW next time to save bricks. Fix these things and I'll change it to 8/10.

I don't rate using a number system because it encourages you to type without thinking about what you are typing. People rate, and then forget to evaluate or discuss. And if you do both of these well, there is no reason to include a numerical rating. Ratings are great for statistics and gathering an idea of which builds are popular, but the sort of "showcase your artwork" setting of the gallery, I don't think they are really appropriate. There isn't a way to sort by ratings either, so rating is pretty much useless.

It makes your post seem more authentic and personal when you don't try and quantify artistic talent. To follow up on that statement, I've never seen an art journal say something along the lines of "Mr. Ensor demonstrates excellent use of contrast in his latest work, it gets an 8/10."
