Is the Wii U a good buy?

If you have an external hard drive, just buy the basic set and Nintendoland and save some monies.

Doing this costs $10 more than buying the deluxe which includes nintendo land

Yeah some places are charging differently since it's new. Also UK prices are different.
Official US price is $299.99 (+$59.99 for nintendoland for a total of $359.98) for basic, $349.99 for deluxe
