Did the master server just poop itself or something?

Badspot unknowingly confirmed it. He replied to a comment that was about a DDoS attack without saying it wasn't a DDoS attack, and I have a strong feeling he would have corrected me if I was wrong.
Furthermore, if you spammed refresh trying to get through the attack you would have gotten an error like "The server sent no data." This is pretty tell tale of a DDoS attack, the server was so busy serving the attack that once it accepted your connection (something that wouldn't happen if the server was down) it was unable to send content before your browser timed out.

No I mean a blocking program that blocks DDOS attacks.

i get what you're saying, but DoS/DDoS attacks are much more different than viruses. :l
