Do not forget make subfolder in zip file. Did you look inside of RTBIcons_XMAS.zip ?

What would happen if a person set their status to busy but you had their icon set to some other icon ie: away, christmas, pumpkin...

Yes
All it does is client-sided change the icons in your rtb gui
