This actually kind of makes sense. Computers can only count so high. So when a program has to deal with extremely high numbers, and still remain fast, it has to start simplifying.
Of course if you want to keep going higher, and still remain accurate, you have to switch to a new system. Such as 64 bit.
numberphile did a video on why we're switching to ipv6, and 64-bit computers and the like.
