| My parents are skeptical about me hosting. |

Your at home router is not a target, hosting a game on it with port forwarding will make you no more likely to be attacked. If there really is a competent hacker out there wanting to get into your home network for whatever ludicrous, unlikely reason, they'll find a way in whether you port forward or not. |

I think a couple of 40-somethings who spend a good portion of almost every weekday managing a regularly used university website and managing a loving SOFTWARE COMPANY have more knowledge about programming and networks than you do. |
