My dad and I have prepared a list for the computer, which we hope the parts will be bought by January. We have many questions though:

* Why is a solid state drive needed as well as a hard drive?
* Does the CPU fan come with the motherboard?
* How are USB ports that come with the case connected to the motherboard, is there a connector?
* The GeForce GTX 960 video card requires 350W PSU, is that extra to the man 450W PSU? Also, isn't the video card powered by the motherboard?
* Can I use any power supply for any case (wattage wise)?
* Does anybody have any experience with the Corsair vs550 PSU? Is it good?
Thanks.

Ill answer questions 1,2,3, and 5

1. SSDs are actually optional to hard drives. Right now HDDs hold the largest storage capacity but SSD flash memory tech is evolving rapidly which leads to lower prices with higher storage capacity. You can also use both as a hybrid setup. Most people who do so store most of their stuff on their HDD and keep the bootable OS on a SSD
2. Processor fans normally come stock with processors when you buy them, IIRC
3. Im going to go off of experience with this one, and say that most computers do have a connector between the case ports and the motherboard
5. Power supplies are designed to fit for a specific form factor, like microATX, ATX, E-ATX, etc, and come in a range of wattages

Once you've built your PC, does anything have to be done before you install the operating system? Like settings in BIOS or something?

usually no
if you want to overclock then yes
but that can still be done after OS install

Yeah, when installing the OS, you gotta first change the boot order
Its simple to do so, all you have to do is press a certain key during booting to access your BIOS, and from there you gotta find the Boot Order options, and make sure your installation media (USB, CD-ROM, etc) with your setup files is set to be the first boot option
Its different for every model of computer, but the process is pretty straight forward if you know what your doing
