Go into your power options and change advanced settings, it should be around your PCI and other settings that you can change around.

Opted for 8GB of good RAM instead of 16GB of "gaming memory", picked a slightly cheaper GTX 960 4GB as it doesn't make any difference in the end unless you're overclocking yourself, and I put the savings into a better wireless card

The GPU switch is a good choice, but I don't see why you did that to the memory. You slashed the total memory in half and got a lower clocked version, saving a mere $15. I'd say if he wanted the 16GB to begin with, there isn't any reason to sacrifice it for such little monetary savings.
