Muzzles56:

This might seem like a dumb question, but is SLI basically combining the power of 2 graphics cards for one output?

SLI = having multiple (not exclusively just 2) Nvidia graphics cards in use at the same time to utilize their combined power

Crossfire = having multiple (not exclusively just 2) AMD graphics cards in use at the same time to utilize their combined power

dkamm65:

Yes.

Nvidia = SLI

AMD = Crossfire

SpreadsPlague:

Just to try and end the Titan/690 debate,

a single Titan will only outperform one 690 in situations where SLI does not scale as well performance wise (leaving the 690 at a disadvantage)

two Titans      >   one 690
two Titans     <    two 690s
three Titans   >   two 690s
four Titans     >   pretty much anything

I would personally go with the Titan because there is room for more Titans. Once you get to 3-4 Titans you have power that can't be matched by two 690s, not to mention all of the other great features packed with a Titan.

Except for the fact that the 690 outperformed the Titan in everything Maximum PC threw at them, even in Crysis 3, which has garbage scaling.
