So is the CD drive unsupported or do I have to buy things to make it work for my new computer?

you have to buy things i think.

i'm not familiar with old tech but i assume theres a sata/ide adapter.

A sate disc drive is probably cheaper than the adapter you would require, or it might be a little bit more. Disc drives are super cheap though.

so i installed ubuntu 12.04 on my old laptop and installed gnome 3 on it...

i have no complaint with it so i don't know why everybody's complaining.

with only a bit of a learning curve it's fine.

when do you think intel will fully opt out of making socket based processors? do you think intel will switch to totally making processors strictly soldered to the board?

I looked through the $500 build and it looks a bit outdated.  I'd like to get something similar though.  It has just the right amount of ram and space that I need.  Could someone who knows more about this than me look through it and update any outdated parts?  Maybe all it needs is a different ram card.  The motherboard is also out of stock.

why would they do that?  They probably make a killing off of the current system.

theres only a matter of time before apple stops making mac pros, and that will be the beginning of the end for desktop processors.

Not at all, what are you even talking about?

less people use desktops than laptops now.

im thinking of upgrading my cpu. would this be compatable with this?

>discontinued

plus you should get a motherboard w/ a z77 chipset

That's the best you can get for your socket I believe, correct me if I'm wrong.

i already have this mobo in my current computer, is it still worth upgrading?

well i usually say that a z77 w/ high end processors is a good pair, also, do you have a good cooler for the cpu and a sufficient power supply?
