I'm trying to find some AM3 socket processors to upgrade my computer but not a lot of retailers have them. A motherboard upgrade is out of the question, atm, so I can't get a new motherboard+cpu combo with a more recent socket type.

I've really only found amazon to have them so if I have to I'll buy from amazon but I want to see if there's anywhere that offers the AMD Phenom II series processors. If there is I'd love to know.

I currently have an AMD Athlon II x4 635 so it should be obvious why I want to upgrade.


Power supply and such are all more recent, cpu's pretty much all I need upgraded right now to get out of the pitt I'm in, performance wise.

You might want to bump up that PSU if you plan on using dual 780's. One 780 uses a lot of power, two is immense. Also, check that case and motherboard configuration to see if you can have two dual GPU slots AND a PCI wifi card!

Also, how do I check if it has enough expansion slots? Whenever I look at images of the mobo all the slots look differently shaped and different sizes and stuff. And how will I know if the cards will fit side by side?

It'd increase the speed at which it locates data and free sectors before reading and writing, which is quite honestly negligible. As far as I'm aware anything else is on the health of the drive.

Depends on what you're expecting performance-wise. A stock Q9450 is almost twice as fast as your E8400 in Passmarks PerformanceTest, and if you get it running stably at 3.2 GHz it'll be about as fast as an i3-3245 or an FX-4350. These chips pop up quite often on eBay; here's one in the US for $90:
