i reinstalled and steam won't recognize my save files

Maybe you need to downgrade it. Pretty sure the Steam version of SA is like v3.0 or something. Your save files might be v2.0 or 1.1 if you ever downgraded before, or played with a disc or something and saved.

true, true. i fixed that issue by deleting a stupid file in the saves folder. but i have YET ANOTHER PROBLEMMMMM
when i try to save a game by overwriting an old save slot, the game freezes. clean game, just reinstalled, no mods.

Try running it in Windows 98Windows XP SP2 Compatibility mode.
