How did you pain the red sections of the controller other than the racing stripe, did you actually paint them or did you just get red plastic parts?

Yes i know that, i mean how did he paint them so that it doesn't end up feeling weird due to paint bulge. I'm considering doing a blue and black on white controller for a friend, but i'm going to use a primer so that the paint will stick.
