I use Freemake Video Converter for converting/compressing, it also supports importing of YouTube URLs. Does everything you really would need.

I just use WMM and the Youtube default, compresses it well enough for uploading in HD

I downloaded a converter that converts things like avi files into .flv format, incredibly nice for uploading to youtube. Took me about 4 minutes to upload, compared to the giant hour it could normally take.
