So because a just-launched game's servers went down and crashed for what, a day? Oh god the world is ending!
The only reason it happened was because EA did what all companies do, they base their server load off of pre-order amounts, however more than an expected number of people didn't pre-order, rather just bought the game the day it came out, leading EA having way too many people vs. server load.
If you're complaining because your internet sucks, it isn't EA's fault that you can't pay an extra $5/month to get the next internet package.

it's going to take a very long time for pirates to even get anything remotely successful in terms of breaking this game's DRM considering it is written around EA's servers.

Many things, MMO's, the ability to feel connected, reliance on people other than yourself.
