I started Assassin's Creed at Brotherhood, I actually liked it better than Revelations.

As did I, and I really didn't mind it.
Although if you want to be filled in briefly with the story, Revelations might be a better option as it has many flashbacks that sum up the first game...

Then you should start from AC 1. The series is very heavily story based, in my opinion the gameplay is there just to move the story along. It gets a tad dull at times but I stick with it because the story is awesome.
