UPnP is a lot safer than port-forwarding because the port that it is running at is not predictable. It's only off by default on most routers because the manufacturers are morons.

uPnP can be used by malware.

If your computer has malware, that's your own issue. That's what an internal firewall is supposed to take care of, the router shouldn't be blocking those.
