Odd, I've had my character since around December 19th and the only "wipe" I had was that one ship wipe everyone had.
Either I'm very lucky or I bought the game after all the full character wipes were had.

Actually, there have been only one or two character wipes.
This occurs when the game no longer supports the way the .player files are written out. Therefore, the game cannot read them and they cannot be seen in the character list.
You must have gotten the game or created a character after both of those wipes.
