You use the molten core to craft a metalwork station, craft the engine upgrade then you can make steel for the next boss. the robot. you get decent fuels in delta and X

I would save your coal. Even late-game in sector X that's still pretty valuable because according to Starbound good ore + coal = great ore. Just explore around your system, one coal will take you to two different planets in the subsystem, 25 will take you to another subsystem, and you'll need 100 to get to another system, which is kind of a pain in the ass. Once you hit Delta and X fuel becomes so common that it doesn't matter and coal should stop being used as fuel because it has better places to be. Like inside bars.
