Risk of Rain is a roguelike action-platformer. Choose a class with their own set of 4 abilities - from the gun-toting Commando to the melee-master Miner to the bomb-chucking Bandit - and explore a pixely world filled with monsters. In roguelike style, much like The Binding of Isaac or Spelunky, each run is different and death is permanent. Kill enemies to gain experience and gold and find special items to build up your character to take on the onslaughts of progressively harder enemies, including bosses. Your goal is to find the teleporter and activate it, causing it to charge up to ready itself for your escape but heavily increasing the spawnrate on monsters and summoning a boss.

The game is currently in development, but you can download the demo (the final version from the Alpha testing period) from the site above and try it out for yourself. The beta is rapidly growing, with more content being added often.

You can also check out Northernlion's "Let's Look At" if you need any convincing, but you should note that the video showcases a much older, alpha-stage version of the game.

Classes

Commando

The Commando is characterized by long range and mobility. Effective use of his tactical dive will grant increased survivability, while suppressive fire deals massive damage. FMJ can then be used to dispose of large mobs.

Rapid Fire: Shoot twice for 2x70% damage.

Full Metal Jacket: Shoot through enemies for 230% damage, knocking them back.

Tactical Dive: Roll forward a small distance. You cannot be hit while rolling.

Suppressive Fire: Fire rapidly, stunning and hitting nearby enemies for 480% damage total.

Miner

The Miner has short range but many dashes. In order to survive, you will have to balance both dashes and your extra jump to avoid enemy fire. Remember that crush does a lot of damage!

Crush: Smash enemies for 120% damage.

Drill Charge: Charge up for 2 seconds. On release, dash through enemies for up to 300% damage. You cannot be hit while dashing.

Backblast: Blast backwards a small distance for 120% damage, stunning all enemies. You cannot be hit while dashing.

To The Stars: Jump into the air, hitting enemies below for 180% damage total.

Bandit - Beta Only

The Bandit requires a quick finger to use his Blast. Use smokebomb to either run away or to stun many enemies at once, followed by a dynamite toss. Dealing a killing blow with lights out allows you to chain many skills together, allowing for maximum damage AND safety.

Blast: Fire a powerful slug for 170% damage.

Dynamite Toss: Toss an explosive in an arc for 230% damage.

Smokebomb: Turn invisible. After 3 seconds or after using another ability, surprise and stun enemies for 140% damage.

Lights Out: Take aim for a headshot, dealing 400% damage. If the ability kills an enemy, the Bandit's cooldowns are all reset to 0.
Cybertails1998:

this game is extremely fun

loving the miner, his stun attack and jump attack are fun to kill things with
I also found a SRM launcher
Regulith:
bump

everyone is saying the miner is easy but I can't seem to get a grasp on it, I just get pummeled when I try to kill things

is it safe to assume the "UNLOCKED" section is a WIP and doesn't actually do anything yet? because I have yet to see anything appear there
Cybertails1998:
you have 2 dashes and a jump attack for a reason
use them

I can't really play commando because everyone keeps closing in and raping me :(

also yeah, UNLOCKED is wip
Tonkka²:
Oh dookey butter, once again the independent developers jump over where the fence is the shortest when it comes to a graphics style and make it into a "retro tribute". Seriously, if the most original loving thing you can think of is "8/16-bit graphics" after it has been used in every indie game know to man. Why not do something creative and unusual like Charcoal drawings or uh.. a light show? Laser wire frame 2D graphics style? We should change the meaning of "indie" to "Rip-off the NES and call it innovation that doesn't belong into the mainstream". I hope at least the gameplay is good. Be right back, testing this.
