Author Topic: I don't understand roman numerals.  (Read 1407 times)

yeah i understand that but why cant i write IL? or XXXXVI?

wouldnt IL be so much easier to write than XLIX?

Without the carry over, there would be no rule stopping people from writing 99 as XXXXXXXXXVIIII.

But then you could just write IC

But no, it has to be complicated! Why do you need to write XCIX??

Consistency. You write the 10s digit first (10 before 100,or XC), then the 1s digit (1 before 10, or IX).

so in that case can you do CD for 400? or only Xs?

I'm pretty sure you can put CD.

Yes 400 is CD.

so DMCVII would be 606

I have romans, with all of their I's and V's and IV's and III's and AAHHHHH ITS SO CONFUSING!

DCVI

DC = 500 + 100

VI = 5 + 1
but D = 500 so couldn't you do DMCVII

nevermind i see how that is redundant now

this is starting to make sense

You should try doing multiplication and division with roman numerals.

Right? Star Wars taught me.

Once you have three of the same numerals, you go to the next numeral and put the previous one ahead of it before actually going to it.
