Why aren't tilde's (~) allowed in regular chat?

Oh, I think I know now.
Maybe badspot disabled it so that when you have the chat window thingy open and you go to the console, you don't accidentally type a tildé?

When I have the chat open and open the console. I don't type a ^

I'm saying, maybe he disabled typing one directly so that you could open the console without accidentally typing a tilde into the chat.
