priest porridge is a health item and shrooms is a power-down.

you can also cook the priest porridge by shooting it with a missile weapon and it will restore more health.

Yeah, if you had the Asbestos Armor and a Firebomb in the old game, you could rocket jump. Not too shabby for the Wolf3D engine.

I've made it to E1L3 on a ridiculously low and unplayable framerate and I managed to find the first secret level, I think that in itself is an achievement.
