Author Topic: I wish Blockland had dynamic bricks...  (Read 3562 times)

Yeah, a lot of games don't allow as much freedom as Blockland does, but still, like I said before, I'm sure Torque could be doing more.
I think you're underestimating how much it's doing.

I think you're underestimating how much it's doing.

Well, I don't exactly know what Torque is and isn't capable of, but if it's been able to do so much so far, what's a little more?

Like I said though, I don't know too much about it, so I could be wrong.

It's not the freedom, it's what they know they can handle.

It's not the freedom, it's what they know they can handle.

But is there someone versed in the engine that can confirm how much it can do?

Because I really want to make a moving train that doesn't require you to sit down constantly.

Hold on, so if the engine is Open source can't you add whatever you want in it? What actually makes the engine have limits, the openGL version? I'm not really sure how to explain this. Or, how come some games  engines can have terrain and lighting (as an example) but other engines can't?

The ghost brick movement is the closest to this type of movement we currently have; the ghost brick really does translate a smooth, but very quick motion when moved around.

Yeah, but I think the grid should be loosened.

Don't hate me for saying this, but I kind of like the physics setup that ROBLOX has.
But the grid is what makes the brick so efficient

That might be true, but making bricks dynamic with torque engine is much more than just a "little more."
Torque works very differently than other game engines. It's somewhat older and a can be quite a bit more limited iirc, you can't simply implement dynamic bricks without changing how the whole basic system works

As is, in a lot of ways Blockland can and is pushing torques limits already. so even "a little more" can be very impractical

Also ignore people saying "who are you." What they're basically saying is "I disagree so instead of making an argument I'm just going to question your reliability by asking who you are."

I'm fairly sure that's just the client rendering it moving. From the server's point of view it experiences no movement and just goes from point A to point B instantaneously - but that would look jarring on the client side.

Unlike games that do have things like motors, etc, like Roblox, Blockland works on a fixed-grid system, you can't make bricks at any arbitrary location.

They can move in arbitrary locations when they're fakekilled.

At that point, they don't really qualify as bricks. Fake-killed bricks are entirely handled by your client - the server has nothing to do with them. If that doesn't make sense to you, think of fake-killed bricks as a figment of your client's imagination; the server is completely uninvolved.

I didn't know it worked like that. So my client is basically using hallucinogenic drugs just to see bricks that aren't there.

What if Blockland was on a different engine. A newer one that is capable of more than Torque is?

We, the Blockheads, must take charge and get involved with the development of our beloved game, Blockland. Our current engine, Torque, is severely outdated, and must be replaced. I propose CryEngine 3 as a replacement.
