Wait, if you are able to select the max option then your card should support it. Set the option to max and then join a game, after you load press ~ button and there should be a list of GLSL Shaders options or something, tell us what has a YES and a NO. Try updating your video card drivers if you havent already.

Like Altiris said, try updating your graphics drivers.
