Would be hard to do this as a non-RTB feature, the whole point of the feature being integrated with RTB hosting is so donators can trust that their money is going towards the upkeep of the server.

You're acting like RTB is the only host. Hint: there are two other ones that are very active.
Here's another way to do it: for those wanting to work outside of the RTB hosting bubble, make sure that the money that was donated to them is publicly viewable.

The people outside the RTB hosting bubble can do it however they want, we're just suggesting a feature that benefits our customers (who happen to be a lot of people, check your data).
People can build off our idea and do it however they want, up to them.
