So essentially, most EA games had some popup where you had to enter some special code to confirm you are the owner of the game and not resale? Sounds like a system which wouldn't work with playing on a friends console or something. I didn't even know this existed.

Well its basically a way to get some money back when people sell used games because the developers get none of that and it harms them so it kinda makes sense. Plus its usually included in the box when you buy it new but if you didn't you can just buy a code.

you have to type in this online pass in order to play online

Like I couldn't play madden 12 online because I bought it used but now I can
