It has to be 75 x 75 in pixels and has to be a JPEG, PNG, or GIF
Normally the forums would resize an image of any size, but it doesn't always work for some reason, and then occasionally, an error may occur due to metadata inflating the file size or whatever

In other words, the avatar system is a broken piece of trash. Upload a 75x75 image and hope that the gods of SMF deem your image worthy enough to use as an avatar.
