--- Quote from: Foxscotch on August 18, 2014, 10:17:00 PM ---they are weapons. weapons are made to kill people or at the very least hurt them that makes them, as a concept, bad if you find some non-murderous use for them, that's a different story. recreational shooting, at a range or something, or hunting for food, stuff like that is fine as far as I'm concerned but none of those things call for respect of the weapons. not in the way you guys think they should be respected, anyway at least two people specifically said that they deserve respect because they were used to kill people. that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in my entire life kitchen knives aren't weapons --- End quote --- I like how you are simply pointing out the fact that weapons are designed to kill. Have you not taken into consideration the number of lives saved by guns? To say guns as a concept are in some way bad is ridiculous. A gun on its own is neither good nor bad. The problem arises when a person has access to the gun, and even then it isn't always particularly bad. The point I think you are missing is that guns deserve respect not because of how many people they have killed, but how many people they have protected. Although I do think its idiotic to give anything that is inanimate any type of respect, one can not deny the importance guns have had in every culture familiar with them. Guns, in my opinion, were created in a way by natural selection. In fact, every weapon ever invented has probably been a result of natural selection, at least indirectly. As technology advanced throughout history, different tribes and nations were forced to either develop more advanced ways of killing their enemies, or face destruction. So if you look at the history of not only guns, but ANY weapon, it is plainly obvious that they were designed to kill. Is that in and of itself a bad thing? Yes, but that of course is before the natural desire to reproduce and survive is taken into account. Weapons weren't just developed because the people that used them were a bunch of bloodthirsty savages, but rather people like you and me, that were forced to kill others in order to survive. The development of weapons technology is natural and inevitable. If your tribe was fighting another, and yours had vastly superior weapons than your enemies, would you not use those weapons? Or would you decide to fight on a level field technologically with your enemy because "guns are bad yo"? What I think people need to realize is that while killing others is a pretty bad thing to do, it is sometimes necessary. Yeah it would be great if all 7 billion people could just say forget violence and live in harmony but that isn't happening any time soon, so the only alternative is peace through superior firepower. Guns are better at deterring enemies from attacking than they are at stopping those attacking enemies. Also a kitchen knife is still a weapon, depending on how it is used. tldr guns aren't the problem, people are. EDIT: fixed some grammar errors |

This reminds me of an idiom: "Friendly fire isn't." |
