They said Interplay could make the mmo, but then said that they violated the contract which apparently said they could only use the Fallout name. Also they didn't want Interplay to forget the lore that Bethesda already forgeted up.

I like bethesda's lore :c But Fallout 1 & 2 seemed like they had an awesome story. I just could never get into the game style. Though Fallout New Vegas just seemed really lazy. I mean I liked the buildings and stuff they made, but the whole game just felt so empty. In Fallout 3 the whole map was just copy pasted buildings over and over, but I didn't feel like I was all alone.

or is like, a co-op version a lot more interesting than an MMO

An open persistent world would be pretty cool. But I'm a sucker for that type of game.

Well there is an open source engine made for Fallout 2 which is fan made Fallout MMO using combined maps from Fallout 1 and 2 and you can make your own factions and faction base. Has cars, crafting(mean you can craft a minigun and other stuff) and role play. Factions play a big part in the game by attacking undefended towns and then they can control them for 24 hours until the town unlocks and the factions attack again.  The eastern European players were jerks as you would find yourself getting blown up with a rocket from all the way across the map only to find some a group of people stand over your splattered remains say "Polack". Good times.
Van Burean was going to be cooperative, as well as a few other cancelled titles.
Also while I consider New Vegas superior to 3, the cities were empty, and there was no real motive to go after Benny. In Fallout 1 the Main quest was always the priority and if time ran out you failed and everyone died and that water chip was a big deal. With New Vegas it getting shot by Benny wasn't a big deal, it like "okay this dude shot you, go find him for some reason because he took some chip that upgrades the securitrons."

I saw that game and I wanted to try it out. Is it still around and do you know if it has a decent player base?

I think that was at least partially the goal
like, we're talking about the mojave desert
loneliness is imo a really interesting thing in a game if you can pull it off
but, if it's boring...

yeah, I guess that would be neat. but if there are a lot of people, you'd run out of things to do, before long, right? either the devs would have to constantly make up new stuff, or maybe other people's actions could do stuff
like, if there's a quest to steal something from some faction, players in that faction could have the option to steal it back, after that happened
but idk tho, cus it couldn't work like that for everything

It has been a few years so I don't know if people still play it. However it gets the lawless wasteland thing down pretty well, which is trust no one. Assume everyone is a murderer or thief or in some cases a Self Delete bomber. It was common to see people in the NCR capital get blown up by Self Delete bombers.

edit: nevermind, the servers are going down permentally. But they will continue to work on the engine and keep the forums going.
