Because Steam offers many other benefits to make up for it - plus on PC you have the option to do either Steam or a physical copy so it's at least a choice.

because Steam has sales, where 4 people can get the same game paying full price

Most physical copies of a game just install the steam version of the game anyway which makes them obsolete at this point.

That's like saying the new kid who's in charge should take the beating for what the old person was responsible for, especially when the new kid is doing a helluva lot better job than the last one.

Do you really think the CEO is 100% responsible for every decision? Loads of the people who will have helped make the online things n such will still be there (aka the investors) and they need to see online passes are bad and deserve to have them shut down like this as punishment.
