We never said it wasn't alright to check if you KNOW you hit something (Like a Great Dane.), but there are tons of holes and bumps in the road, and it was a small dog.
You're trying to base this only off of your emotions for the animal that got hit, while we're using our experiences driving and the driver's perspective as well.
When I'm sitting in the passenger seat I can clearly see bumps and holes and know to expect hitting them.
When you just randomly hit a bump in an area where there are no speed bumps and no visible bumps or holes, then I think the person driving would be like "What the forget did I just hit?"
But to be honest I'm not sure if I would go out and check if I didn't see the dog run into the road. Unless of course there was somebody on the other side of the street who gasps or screams or something...
