why are most big projects usually passworded?

DrenDran:
'asdf' is very often a password
Bushido:
i don't password mine because my stuff usually involves having multiple people

and i don't like having a specific group of dudes, cause then they'd either get wise to the bullstuff i pull or be too small to accomplish what i'm trying to do anyway
shyGriff:
i password mine, usually, because i don't want other people coming in and building nearby/messing stuff up
i do occasionally host something else and then just build while everyone is doing their own thing
for some reason i prefer having a passworded multiplayer server than a singleplayer one, even though they're the exact same
i don't know why
PeeEsPee:
Some people make their servers passworded so that people will see the title, and it'll generate more hype for it's final release.

the issue with that is that nobody gives a crap about passworded servers
whats the point if you can't get in

or they just have that box checked that doesn't show passworded servers
