I have a feeling that the events that start portal 1 happen just around the time the combine invade. Because then no one would know what was happening at Aperture or else you would probably heard of it, or explains the reason why no one went back after everyone died (because I mean, how can you not find out about family members being killed when they don't come back from work/don't respond?). Then portal 2 happens around the time of/before half life 2.

portal 2 happens about 300 years after portal 1. the game, comics, and valve themselves were pretty clear on that.
