How do you add more players in Spelunky?

I just bought the new version of Spelunky and I want to play it with my brother. I'm going to use the controller and he's gonna use the keyboard. But I don't see any way to add more players...On the character selection screen pressing 'z' does nothing. Do I have to beat the game or something?
