2nd gen Camry life update: It runs like stuff in the rain, I can only go 50 down the highway before the car tries to rattle itself apart because of a bad 4th cylinder piston ring. It will run ok dry but only after it warms up. Also, everytime it freezes outside here in good ol Michigan (like when the latches freeze up and its hard to pull the doors open) I have the loving opposite problem. My doors open and then the latches somehow get frozen open after you open them the first time, I had to drive 30 miles on the highway today holding the door shut with one hand and steering with the other in blizzard conditions with only the defroster on because crappy vent direction system. Any shifting had to be done by my brother in the other seat otherwise id need three hands. I had bungee straps in the car but I tried to hook one to the door and that worked for about two minutes until it snapped off and put a giant crack in my rear view mirror, could've been worse, I could've been down an eye. So I said forget bungee cords. The worst part is 30 miles and 2 bicep sizes later I finally got to where I was loving going cold and tired, got out of my car, and SHUT the door. It actually loving closed right there in the parking lot, I about had a stroke I was so mad. I walked back outside and opened it again and fully expected it to close, but it didn't. chalk up 5 more miles of teamwork shifting and freezing my ass off My car REALLY needs work, but my dad is too preoccupied with his Edsel project to do anything in our heated garage, it might help if I could just park in there too, so I don't have to have unbalanced bicep size also I think im getting a cold now from driving home in that stuff other problems: headlight loose connection (sorta fixed) dead dome light handbrake gets stuck 2nd and 1st synchros are bad (mostly 2nd first is ok but not good) brake fluid leak cruise only works if it feels like you deserve cruise control (it worked today, thanks Camry) Edit: I am slowly becoming XR-7 |

--- Quote from: ABlockOfCheese on January 11, 2016, 12:33:27 AM ---how does a piston ring cause a rattle? --- End quote --- it kicks because it misfires on 4th cylinder,oil leaking through fouls the spark plug. only does it between 1500 and 2300 rpm for some reason, so when I'm going down the highway 55ish mph is 4th gear's 3000 rpm mark (where its pretty stable if you're not too hard on the pedal in the wet) if you do go hard on the pedal in any gear at any rpm in the wet it will kick violently, so getting to 70 mph (5th gear's more stable point in the wet) requires a massive hill so I just stick to 55 in the rain it really sucks, but I cant afford a better car and I wont be selling this to anyone besides a master mechanic |

So far the new problems that I've encountered this winter: I may or may not have damaged/disconnected/shorted a wire leading to one of my taillights (so now it doesn't work). I also found out that my doors freeze closed as well as the driver side lock. The car jitters on startup in extremely cold temperatures. There is a banging noise coming from somewhere in the back, which may or may not be a problem. Problems that still exist and still need to be addressed: My brake lines are still not done. My fuel filter is still not done. I need to checkup on my carpet for water damage. The engine idling issue is still completely unknown and an ever-present constant hassle. The "Check Engine" light occasionally comes on and off, but it's usually off. It's something fuel related, maybe even just a sensor. The left front brake occasionally moans like a horny humpback whale. The car vibrates tremendously during heavy acceleration. The ceiling fabric is still hanging in front of the back window. I lost a bolt when disassembling the dashboard so now my glove box rattles a bit (the bolt is somewhere in the car). There is still a popping noise coming from the left front wheel when steering while driving. Suspension has been professionally checked with no diagnosed problem. Oh and by the way, my car died and was having tons of trouble on Thursday. I drove over to my community college to ask my advisor a question and to rent my college books, but completely underestimated how much time that was going to take. I knew it wouldn't take long though, so I just left the car running while I went inside so I wouldn't have to fight it when trying to leave. I came back out too late though. Letting the car idle for long periods of time (e.g. parking lots, drive thrus, traffic jams, etc) also makes it act up. As soon as I shifted into reverse, the RPM plunged downwards so I quickly gave it gas and brakes simultaneously. I backed out of the parking space and the car died in the middle of the parking lot. I started it like 5 times but couldn't manage to get it to hold an idle at all, which was odd because I'm 95% of the time able to get it working. I started the car, bumped it into drive, and then squealed my tires in a desperate effort to get it accelerated enough to hold the idle for a few seconds as well as get out of the way. I raced around the back of the lot where there were no cars at all and then the car died right in front of the athletics center, which was thankfully closed. I flipped on my hazards and shut the car off. I popped the hood, let it cool for a few minutes, and then managed to get it to a bumpy idle. My only hope at getting home was to get the car to a place where it can drive fast, as that somehow "cures" the engine. I two-footed my way through the stop signs to escape the campus and onto the frontage road next to the highway. I got through more stop signs and got onto the highway where I had about three miles before the stoplight. I drove at 70mph for that period of time and was fine from there. |
