"You have the puck" is helpful for non-experienced players. However, the ==== is easier to glance at.

I say Racer's idea.
just to counter your first point, people will catch on quickly and be well aware of the feature before games.

It will also be clearly noted in the final release topic.

why have the red bar?  There are two possible states, and it's probably more obvious to just make an indicator appear or disappear.
because red means no puck and green means shoot? why have it disappear and reappear, that's just more confusing.

I disagree, a bar would suggest that there are states in between, especially if it just starts out all red.  It tells you nothing at first, unlike the "you have the puck" element.  No game displays an item you don't have in red all of the time, that's a massive waste of space, especially if it's a giant bar.  Most sports games solve this sort of issue by hi-lighting the player with the puck or the puck itself if no one has it, it doesn't just show a puck.

It's not about information being conveyed over time, it's about understanding it all in the end and having it function better than something that conveys information quicker, but inefficiently.

it's not huge, check it out in-game playing full-screen.

I just came up with the best idea ever

========================You have the puck=================================

========================You don't have the puck=============================

in respective green and red

More than "you have the puck" in a bottomprint colored green is superfluous

the sound of the puck hitting you/your sticks and the sound of it sliding should be good enough
i almost never have sound on so die

I would say Racer's idea. However I believe if you don't have the puck it should say nothing. Nothing when you don't have it, green lines when you do. Then you don't even have to distinguish, when you have a line across the screen you have it.

Maybe its just me, but when i stare at the center of the screen (like i would when i'm playing), i don't really notice the bar colors at the bottom, especially when they're mixed green/red with black. i'd rather just a "You have the puck!!" thing appear, and when you don't have the puck, make it not appear. seems easier to understand. in a ctf, you don't have a message saying "You don't have the flag!"

Why not this?

==========You have the puck.========== (green)

================================= (red)

a better variation to the equal signs would be to remove black bar and a bunch of underscores

Instead of the equal sign, you should use either _ or - symbols. (I can't remember which, but I use one for the Slayer CP bar. I think it's _) It results in an unbroken line.

Also, make the black background go away by adding a "true" boolean as the last variable in your bottomPrint call.

or why not have both?
let people swap with a brick/command

i almost never have sound on so die

I like the colored bars better, calling it spam is stupid.

Meh I prefer "You have the puck" to be honest.

I'd say go with "You have the puck", but add a dingaling sound when you get it as well.
Maybe use the same sound you have when your sandman ball regenerates in TF2.
