I think it's fine as long as new players don't start out with a toy gun and a carrot to stick up someones ass.
Like you can buy differently functioning weapons that are balanced to eachother and the starters for variety

I've been running these battlefront servers for over a year now and I've come to decide that buyable weapons is the best option to choose. A bad example to use, but call of duty has buyable weapons, and they have THE most popular FPS console game ever.
The purpose of this thread is to inform the community of the project and possibly get more hands on board. The game system works perfectly and has been successful and enjoyable. Complaints about the current system are not appreciated.

I've tried a mixture, fixed team inventory, optional inventory and unlockable weapons.
I feel unlockable items gives players a goal to work to, which makes the game more rewarding and holds more playability.
I personally would rather play a game where I have to unlock things instead of getting everything already unlocked at the start (for example, I felt totally ripped off by LFD2 as it comes with all missions unlocked)
The weapon system will not change to a class system however I may add in new blasters and such.

Agreed. I forgot to mention that servers that use pistols for starters are terribly outbalanced, but a mix of weapons allows for fairness.
