clearly you've not lived here your whole life. California is full of pollution, morons, and the beaches are gross depending on where you go. Either covered in trash and rusted nails, or full of rich snobs who think they are better than you because they have money
I was born in the Central Valley where I have lived my whole life south of the city of Modesto. Some days you can see both mountains like on a windy day, other days the sky is smoggy. The SMOG act is a joke, it has done nothing to make the air cleaner.
Most of the rich snobs are found in the cities San Jose and San Fransisco or along the coast. They are so delusional that they want to build a highspeed railroad that will connect Los Angeles to San Francisco at the expense of the valley's farmland.
The Sierra mountain range to the east that runs north to south along to central valley are a nice place to visit. Pretty much the only place in the state you will ever see snow in the winter.
