He shouldn't have even been fighting him in the first place, the dispatcher said "We don't need you to follow Trayvon", and he clearly heard them and said "ok" and did it anyway. Now I understand you do not have to listen to the dispatcher, but he was the neighborhood watch, he watches, then calls in suspicious things he sees.
I think people too often confuse what's morally wrong and what's illegal. Following someone despite a police officer telling you that it's unnecessary is not illegal. It sure as hell may have been wrong for him to do that, but it's not a violation of any law. Florida has a stand your ground law which means that if you believe your life is in danger, it is legal for you to shoot the person who's putting your life in danger. Should Zimmerman have followed Trayvon? Probably not. Should Trayvon have attacked Zimmerman? Probably not. When it comes down to it, Trayvon was the first person who committed a crime by attacking Zimmerman, and in Florida there are laws that say it is legal for someone that is being violently attacked to use deadly force to protect themselves. It's irrelevant if you think this law is wrong, it's a law.
EDIT: More relevant, I don't think Zimmerman pointing a gun at his wife is relevant to him shooting Martin. I obviously think he should be tried at the full extent of the law for this crime. Though, I can almost guarantee that it's going to end in mistrial.
