they would have to include different versions of their face to accommodate
the ones that don't support it just don't do it

This would actually be pretty easy, just check how many words you're sending and play a face-change animation client-side. Could be useful for filming.
Gen. Hothauser:
There was an addon called the "blink mod" that causes the avatars to blink periodically. This mod requires the avatar have the default face on.
