You could try switching to PulseAudio, ALSA may just not be seeing the correct default soundcard. You could figure out how to switch it too.

I'm not dealing with an OS that's blind to other stuff on my laptop and can't remember login details I specified during installation.
That goes for both 12.04 and 13.04. Someone else can do it if they want, but haha, not from me.
