I'm not 100% sure, but I think if you solo queue as an unranked, every game you get till you are ranked (10 wins) will put you with random skill groups to calibrate your ELO (hidden rating) and try to determine where you stand based on your performance and match result against said skill groups. If you play with friends though, it will more than likely put you close to their rank with slight variance based on how hard you carry/get carried |

yeah i've noticed that too, it started out with medium-rank silvers and now there's been gn3's i've still consistently been top / 2nd top frag, save for a few |

you always have a rank, its just hidden and changes throughout those first 10 matches to fit you with the correct skillgroup |

SEM seems to have a high ELO variance, whereas at the bottom of SEM, you'll see silver 3-SE, and at the top of SEM, you'll see more gold novas. |
