Here ya go, this explains most things. the downtime is a result of server overflow.
Everything is having issues right now.
Since it was Christmas, and a ton of Nintendo systems were sold, the traffic is not surprising.

Going off topic a bit (how ironic) there is a problem with the Nintendo servers for both the Wii u and 3DS consoles. So anyone getting errors like "Please try again later, if this problem persists please contact customer support." just keep trying, hopefully it will be fixed by tonight.

Got a Wind Waker Wii U DELUXE EDITION for Christmas but it is a digital version and I can't download it. :(
