is sharing unused keys ok?

I have an old key that i never really used after the whole sale in 2012, and a friend of mine asked if i had any for them to use. is there anything i have to do so it'll be allowed or is not allowed at all?
note: he wants to register the key for steam

I'm assuming that it's a pretty bad idea. Badspot says somewhere (forgot where) why it's the case.

You never used it? That means no IP is linked to it.
I think if you throw it in the steam linking thingy it'll work.
