Lol, I rooted my samsung galaxy 2 hours after I got it, while it was my first android phone. Then I installed Cyanogenmod on it and the GoLauncher with some stuffty theme.
Good memories .

EDIT: Why not iOS 7?

He probably has a 4th Gen iPod. They can't install iOS 7, which sucks.

This isn't a rom, but there's entrepreneur  My Rom. Which essentially has a ton of tweaks and tools for you to use on top of whatever rom you're using. This is all assuming you're rooted, too.

There are plenty of stock based ROMs, it all depends on what phone you have though.

Why would that be a sympathy act? Do you seriously think someone would say their ipod bricked for sympathy?
