It's just not on Steam.

I am aware of that.
But the current demo as-is still allows for networking because you can input your key and unlock the full version.
If a demo was on Steam, since the key system does not work like that anymore, the demo version should at least be strapped by those functions as they would be completely useless nonetheless.

What exactly is your problem here?

"Let's make a clone of the working game to remove a few features and end up with basically the same thing"

In the premises of having a demo on Steam, having key auth for the DEMO means being able to play on Steam with your actual key, turning the DEMO into a full game. That's all. Having the whole auth on the Steam DEMO would be pointless and also allow people to auth with their keys.
If you would simply not make it being able to auth, there would be no point of the bottom auth bar, nor for networking or for the Network options in the menu.

What's so hard to understand in particular?

Because Blockland is intended to be able to connect to LAN servers through the demo.

Honestly. The system is already there. Didn't buy the game? You're in demo. The steam version is already capable of this during downtimes because I've seen it and I've seen people post about it. There really isn't any work that needs to be done.
