I'd like to stay where I am in the FREE COUNTRY OF AMERICA

All of this

my grandfather was from wallsend up in the north

he died before I was born so I have no idea of his experiences, but I do know they were bad enough for him to move to america during the great depression
You do know that the great depression affected both America and the UK, and that people from both countries emigrated to pretty much anywhere in order to look for work?

And really, your grandfather's decision doesn't reflect on the UK. Just the fact that who would really want to live that close to Newcastle?

Of course, there are going to be people like that, but they're less common.
