Author Topic: Programs to compress uncompressed .mpg and/or .flv files  (Read 2001 times)

Both the video and audio channels are in MPEG format, overall MPEG-PS. When I was thinking of compression, I primarily meant what formats should I convert to which are more optimized, and what should I use to do it.

I think you were a bit misinformed when you turned down using Handbrake.

It encodes video files to mp4, which is basically the best compression you can get with minimal quality loss. It can convert your mpg files to mp4 just fine.

When I go to open a file, it only shows .mp4 and .mkv files. It doesn't want me to input any other filetypes.

Edit: Hmm... That button was misleadingly named.

Yeah the UI is a bit wonky at first. I'm also unsure of whether or not it'll convert FLV files, though you can definitely give it a try.

My main concern is the .mpg files. It just converted a 1.27GB .mpg to a 357MB .mp4. Very nice.

Although I do have a question: Can you restrict the CPU usage? It uses basically max CPU while it runs, and for large files that's max CPU for quite a while. I don't need them done that fast, so I'd rather limit the CPU usage to one core (4 core). I looked through the options but didn't see anything. Probably missed something.

So I was looking for a way to limit the amount of cores Handbrake will use, since by default it uses all at maximum for however long it takes to convert the file. So far, what I've found is I could add ":threads=3" to a Advanced Parameter, and it will limit the cores used. However, I have yet to find specifically where it is. The only mentions I found of the area are very outdated and don't seem to apply to the current version of the program. I've tried dropping it in the export settings, and an Argument field in the options, but those weren't correct.

Just curious if anyone knows where that would go, if it still works, etc. By the way, 7.73GB file > 1.42GB file. Very good... Hmm, FRAPS...
