the thing is that simple, repetitive strategies keep newer players interested. it's cheap and dumb, but it makes them feel strong and makes them feel like getting better. eventually, they outgrow them in favour of strategies that work more generally and in better taste, but the easy strats help close gaps between the pros and the new players, which may not mean anything to a lot of people, but it's pretty important for a fighting game. call it bad design if you want; it helps out everyone. the great thing about fighting games is that, if you're not doing matches way under your skill level, everyone can take something away from the battle. because, again, it's all mind games, and you get better at mind games through practice and new challenges
